American Diabetes Diet
Today we'll discuss what foods are suitable for an American diabetes
diet. We'll do so, because people with diabetes usually have a
greater propensity to gain weight.
An American Diabetes Diet - Nutritional Needs
People who have diabetes have the same nutritional needs as anyone else
in the community. Also, the need for regular exercise is the same
for those with diabetes as it is for those without.
In particular, making use of exercise and diet controls, along with
medications, are essential for managing diabetes. By having a
well-balanced diet and choosing the right types of foods, the diabetic
can move their blood sugar back towards regular levels. And
controlling blood glucose levels is what managing diabetes is all about.
Sweeteners for the American Diabetes Diet
In the past, most people with diabetes would be relegated to a bland,
sugarless diet plan. However, with the numerous choice of
artificial sweeteners now available, their diet can remain interesting,
and satisfying. Not only do sweeteners help reduce the intake of
glucose, but they help to avoid additional calories which cause you to
put on weight.
Is sugar permitted at all in the American diabetes diet?
The answer is yes. When sugar is digested, it's converted into
glucose. But so is every other type of food. So what's
important is not avoiding sugar per se, but ensuring your overall glucose
level is correct.
Actual sugar can be consumed in moderation.
Why losing weight is important for diabetes
By reducing your weight, you'll also reduce the amount of insulin that
you require. And in the case of type II diabetes, losing weight
will give your natural insulin and chance to do a better job.
Secondly, by losing weight, you'll reduce the amount of fats in your
blood, as well as reduce your blood pressure. People with diabetes
are about twice as likely to develop cardiovascular disease.
