Dangers of the Zone Diet

With a plethora of different diet types around, it's prudent to consider what is safe.  After all, the purpose of a good diet is for you to reach your goal weight, and maintain it for some time.  But did you know there are significant health dangers is many diets?

What is the Zone Diet?

The Zone Diet, proposed by Barry Sears, considerably lowers your intake of carbohydrates, and this includes reducing the amount of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains  you're allowed to consume.

The Zone Diet sets a 40% carbohydrate, 30% protein, and 30% fat food intake ratio.  The theory of the Zone Diet is that eating carbohydrates raises your blood sugar, which increases the insulin, and the amount of fat uptake in your body.

What are the Dangers of the Zone Diet?

The facts ignored by the Zone Diet are that people who consume a sizable amount of fruits and vegetables have a significantly lower risk of heart disease and cancer.  People consuming a good selection of these foods are also leaner, on average, than those who don't.  That fact alone is a statistic worth remembering.

There are additional dangers to consider.  Diets higher in fat and protein and lower in carbohydrates, such as the Zone Diet, also lead to higher risks of stroke, high blood pressure, and adult onset diabetes, according to clinic studies.

The Dangers over time

Low carbohydrate diets produce a quicker loss of fluid loss, initially.  This is usually mistaken as weight loss.  But your fluid levels vary each day, and are in no way related to fat loss.  (See Lose 10 pounds)

In addition, if the calorie intake is too low, what is lost in the diet is lean muscle tissue, rather than fat.  Unfortunately, such weight loss is regained just as quickly.

Putting the Dangers into Perspective

The Zone Diet is low in fruits and vegetables, and grains, and is extremely low in fiber.  Low fiber diets are directly linked to markedly increase risks of bowl cancer.

Those seeking a safer alternative, should consider a much healthier and effective approach, such as Slim for Life.
