Diet Menus for Diabetes

What many people may not know about diabetes is the marked increased risk of heart disease that suffers of diabetes have.  For many, this may come as a shock, and is another complication to the long list that diabetics already face.

Today, we discuss diet menus for diabetes, and how to best counter this risk factor.

Diabetes and Heart Disease

Heart disease occurs when the arteries become so clogged by plaque deposits, that blood flow supplying the very heart itself is reduced, placing the heart on the road to a potential cardiac arrest.

The Essential Elements of Diet Menus for Diabetes

Diet menus for diabetes need to be

Low

  • in fats, particularly saturated or animal fats

  • in white, refined flour

  • in cholesterol

  • in calories, since obesity dramatically increases the risk of heart disease

  • in simple or refined sugars

  • in sodium, particularly if elevated blood pressure has already been identified

High

  • in complex carbohydrates, particularly those containing raw fiber.  For example: brown bread, brown rice

  • in fresh fruits and vegetables
