Diet Pills

There are nearly as many different approaches to losing weight as there are people trying to diet.  Some diet techniques are effective.  Others are down right dangerous.  And helping you identify what is safe and effective is the mission of The Weight Loss Slimmer ™.

Today we carefully examine the background of diet pills to see whether they are safe for those wanting to shed some pounds.

What are Diet Pills?

Diet pills are drugs sold by drug companies which are claimed to produce a weight reduction benefit.  The list of diet pills is endless, but some common examples are Solidax ADX, Phentermine, Kava, Xenical, Fat Absorber TDSL, Bontril, Meridia.

The main mechanism most diet pills use is appetite suppression.  They alter your body's chemistry to decrease your natural desire to eat.

How does Appetite Suppression work in Diet Pills?

You may have noticed that there are certain times that you're hungrier than others.  Perhaps when you're bored, lonely, or you've had a bad day, food can sometimes be your "best friend".

But likewise, there are times when the last thing your want is to do is eat.  Perhaps when you're about to give a public speech in front of a thousand people.  Perhaps a relative has died.  Or maybe your exercising excessively.  Your body uses certain body states when your sympathetic nervous system is heightened, to turn off your desire to eat.

Diet pills attempt to induce a similar state in your body.

How does Appetite Suppression work?

Re-examine the list of example situations that cause significant diet suppression above.  If you're prepared to kill off a relative each day, run a marathon race 7 days a week, or spend each day in a state of severe nervousness, you could effectively suppress your appetite for long periods.  But you may find yourself turning grey and suffering a nervous breakdown in the process.

The body is designed to switch off its appetite in extreme situations when you are under immediate and lethal threat.  It's an important self defense mechanism.  For instance, when you're being chased down the street by a someone carrying a gun, the last thing you want to feel is the need to stop off for a bucket of KFC.

But this protective mechanism, known as fight or flight, must only be used for short and infrequent periods of time.  It must be limited to times when you're facing actual danger.  Otherwise, your body undergoes a number of severe side effects when this heightened state is maintained for long periods.

How do Diet Pills use Appetite Suppression?

Most diet pills severely stimulate your body to send it into a state of acute nervousness or heightened stimulation, the sort that you experience when you step out in front of a vehicle on a busy road.  However, in the case of diet pills the adrenaline rushes and state of high anxiety doesn't quickly subside as it would in a natural situation.

What are the Side Effects of Diet Pills?

The possible side effects of some diet pills as shown by extensive medical testing are: nervousness, restlessness, insomnia, high blood pressure, fatigue and hyperactivity, heart arrhythmias and palpitations, congestive heart failure or heart attack, stroke, headaches, dry mouth, vomitting and diarrhea or constipation, intestinal disturbances, tightness in chest, tingling in extremities, excessive persperation, dizziness, disruption in mentrual cycle, change in libido, hair loss, blurred vision, fever and urinary tract problems. Overdoses can cause tremors, confusion, hallucinations, shallow breathing, renal failure, heart attack and convulsions.

When is the right time to take Diet Pills?

The only time we recommend that diet pills are justified, is when a patient is morbidly obese, and the patient has a significant threat to his life expectancy because of the his excessive obesity.  In such circumstances, the risk of morbid obesity may be higher than the risks which are attributed to diet pills, and medication prescribed by a registered doctor is warranted.

What is the Best Option for those who aren't Morbidly Obese?

For the 98% of us who carry excess weight, a properly structured weight loss program that heavily focuses on a long-term lifestyle change is the best option.  One good example of this is Slim for Life.

In summary, diet pills are best left for medical emergencies, because of the inherent high risks which many diet pills have associated with them.  For most dieters, safer and more effective alternatives are available.
