Low Carb

Today we get right back to basics, and thrash out the truths and the deception of the claim: "low carb".

What is Low Carb?

Firstly, what is low carb?

Low Carb Diet: a diet which uses carbohydrate control as a method of weight loss

Low Carb Food: a food which:

  1. contains few total carbs

  2. contains fewer carbs than a product of that type normally would

  3. contains few carbs per serve

Low carb diets are relatively straight forward.  And even if you don't understand the intricacies of the diet, at least there's only one definition.  Low carb foods, on the other hand, mean entirely different things in different situations.  Hence, most consumers are confused, or even worse, mislead.

Low Carb Food (contains few total carbs)

This meaning is straight forward.  Some foods, say like butter, contain very few carbs in total, and hence are low carb foods.

Low Carb Food (contains fewer carbs than a product of that type normally would)

A manufacturer can call their product "low carb" if it contains a percentage fewer carbs than other typical products of this type.  So bread, a food high in carbs to begin with, may be labeled "low carb" when it has fewer carbs than regular bread, but still contain a high amount of carbohydrates.

Low Carb Food (contains few carbs per serve)

Many recipes are labeled low carb because they contain few carbs per serve.  But the suggested serve size is often ridiculously small, and you might normally eat 4 or 5 times as much as their serving size.  The low carb food suddenly adds a lot more carbs to your diet that you expected.
