Phentermine

We've had a number of readers ask us about phentermine, and to give them some more information about it.

What is Phentermine?

Phentermine is a drug used to artificially suppress the appetite, and promoted by many as a weight loss pill.

It does this by affecting the level of serotonin and norepinephrine produced by the brain.  If some of you recognize these names from descriptions about highly potent prescription medication used to treat clinical depression, then you'd be right.  Phentermine is in a similar group of drugs.

This drug is often marketed by online pharmacies and the associated web sites they set up to promote this drug, as a "must have" diet pill.  It's for this reason, and our indisputable care for the welfare of those losing weight, that we need to bring you the complete story on phentermine.

What are the side effects of Phentermine?

Phentermine has some notable, medically proven side effects, which  include dizziness, blurred vision, or restlessness, and it may hide the symptoms of extreme tiredness.

Are there any long term effects of taking phentermine?

Unfortunately, yes there are, and they are significant.  Phentermine is habit forming, both physically and psychologically.  Users of phentermine are likely to undergo possibly significant side effects if they attempt to stop taking this "diet pill".

To which group of drugs does phentermine belong?

Phentermine is a sympathomimetic amine, and so is related to amphetamines, such as speed.  These drugs cause an increase in your heart rate, and in your blood pressure.

In particular, the following people should never take phentermine.  People who:

  1. have heart disease or high blood pressure

  2. have arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)

  3. have glaucoma

  4. have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), or phenelzine (Nardil) in the last 14 days

  5. have a history of drug or alcohol abuse

Also, people who suffer from the following conditions may have additional, potentially life threatening complications when using this diet pill.  People who have:

  1. problems with your thyroid

  2. an anxiety disorder

  3. epilepsy or another seizure disorder

  4. diabetes

  5. pregnancy
