Some of our readers have written in and specifically requested
information on Topamax as weight loss drug. So let's look at it in
some detail.
What is Topamax?
Topamax is actually a drug used in the treatment of seizure disorders,
namely epilepsy. At one stage there was some research done into its
suspected benefits to those wanting to lose weight. Of course on
the surface, you would be forgiven for wondering what the possible
connection could be between an epilepsy medication, and obesity.
But many drugs do have discovered uses other than those for which they
were originally designed.
So is Topamax as weight loss drug approved? It ends up that phase 3
weight loss trials had to be discontinued, because the drug produced
significant, unfavorable side effects. Hence, Topamax is not
approved for weight loss.
Does Topamax have any unexpected uses?
Although Topamax isn't suitable for weight loss, it turns out that it
does have significant benefits in providing some relief to migraine
suffers. The drug is given at a dosage around 50% of that typically
used in controlling epilepsy, and a sample size of 500 chronic migraine
suffers were involved in the clinical trials.
Summary
Topamax as weight loss drug? It is not approved for weight loss,
due to its side effects.
