Using Topamax as a Weight Loss Drug
We've had a number of requests by our readers to bring you more
information on the drug Topamax, as a follow up to the aspects of the
drug we've already discussed.
What is Topamax used for?
Topamax, or topiramate, was approved by the FDA as an anti-seizure
medication in December of 1996. Seizures affect 2.3 million
Americans diagnosed with epilepsy, and so the final approval and
effectiveness of the drug in this area was an important step.
What are the side effects of Topamax?
While Topamax clearly has its benefits, it is not with its side effects.
Common side effects include excessive drowsiness, loss of appetite,
fatigue, nervousness, difficulty with concentration and attention,
aggressive reactions, and difficulty with memory. Those taking
Topamax can also experience somnolence, dizziness, coordination problems,
speech disorders, psychomotor slowing, abnormal vision, sensory
distortion and double vision.
Using Topamax as a weight loss drug
One of the side effects stated above, loss of appetite, can also lead to
some weight loss. While this is one of the possible effects of
taking Topamax, weight loss cannot be achieved without the potential of
all of the side effects listed above.
Those considering using Topamax as a weight loss drug should be aware
that any of the stated side effects could be experienced, even if weight
loss doesn't occur.
Is there a safer choice that using Topamax?
We believe weight loss should be treated only as a part of an overall
lifestyle change, as can be achieved on a program like
Slim for
Life.
